A team with no direction. At one point they were building for the future and Kristaps Porzingis as the fulcrum of that direction. Then they were a team that was attempting to be a contender by adding Joahkim Noah who was signed to a 4 year 72 million dollar deal who only averaged 22 minutes per game and played in 46 games. They made a trade for Derrick Rose who has not been a good NBA starter for about 3 years now. Then when it became as obvious as it should have been to everyone prior to the season that this experiment was an awful idea it was made clear that the objective of the season was to trade Carmelo Anthony for some pennies if possible.
…….None of these things were accomplished this year.
Justin Holiday, Sasha Vujacic, Ron Baker, and Derrick Rose are all up this off season. None of these players should be retained as none of them have proven themselves to be worth a roster spot over available free agents.
It’s hard to gauge what the franchise is looking to do in its future. The best case scenario involves things out of anyone’s hands as the root of the problem lies in the owner, but that is an unrealistic solution.
Carmelo needs to be traded. It has become a toxic situation with Phil Jackson randomly bashing him constantly and they are not making the playoffs with him. At this point getting rid of him for anything of higher value than dirt is best for the Knicks. Carmelo is 33 years old. Find a trade partner he would be willing to go to like the Clippers, Cavaliers, possibly Raptors, hell any team he is willing to waive his no trade clause on. If the Knicks got Austin Rivers, Wesley Johnson and a first round pick or something in that nature out of it would be a victory for the Knicks.
The Knicks need to make the push towards the future. Porzingis should be that future. Having ball stopping players does not help.
In free agency finding an athletic wing could help them out. Someone like C.J. Miles would be a great addition to the team. Also with Joahkim Noah more than likely collecting a check on IR all year finding a solid rebounder is something they should look for. Someone like Kris Humphries just makes a lot of sense.
The Knicks have the 8th pick and they should really be looking at Dennis Smith out of NC State. The Knicks desperately need a guard who can generate points and Smith is a solid pick & roll guard who could complement Porzingis well. He could have some growing pains in the NBA due to some of his sloppy play, but he would be a great addition to the Knicks.
The Knicks have more issues than any other team in the league and it is very unlikely any of them get solved anytime soon. Phil Jackson showing an inability to adapt with the modern era, the constant drama with Phil and Carmelo, and the stunted growth of Porzingis are all issues that seem to have no resolution in the near future.
