2016 Boston Celtics Offseason Preview: Lots of Cash to Spend

Many NBA teams are trying to rebuild, but I would argue that none have done it better than the Boston Celtics. They won championships led by Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett, then flipped those two when they were older and now will have a high lottery pick 3 years in a row from the abomination that is the Brooklyn Nets organization. On top of that, they have a deep roster filled with guys with lots of talent who for some reason couldn’t fit in with other teams. They have an elite coach who’s one of the league’s youngest in Brad Stevens. Oh, and they have as much cap space as anyone who doesn’t play in Philadelphia, as well as picks #3 and #16 this season. If you’d like to tell me what team to do this for next, tell me on Twitter (@edelmanpis), and you can see my Sixers offseason preview right here. Now, let’s look at the rotation players on their roster going into the offseason…

PG- Isaiah Thomas, Marcus Smart

SG- Avery Bradley

SF- Jae Crowder, Evan Turner (UFA)

PF- Amir Johnson, Jonas Jerebko

C- Jared Sullinger (UFA), Kelly Olynyk, Tyler Zeller (RFA)

In my eyes, their biggest needs are a borderline All-Star big-man, and a lethal shooter to play at the backup SG spot. But let’s remember, they have the 3rd pick in the draft. Two prospects could fill a need, Dragan Bender and Buddy Hield. I’m personally not as high as many on Hield’s future, and I don’t think it would be smart to trade the pick. That means the pick needs to be Bender. At pick #16, I’d take someone like Washington scorer Dejounte Murray. Now, we enter the Free Agent Waters…

First off, let’s look at the team’s expiring contracts. I would let Jared Sullinger go unless it was possible to retain him on a true bargain of a contract, but that isn’t going to happen. It would be smart to get Turner and Zeller back on 2-3 year contracts, for however much it costs. I still want that lethal shooter off the bench, so I look to Eric Gordon, formerly of the New Orleans Pelicans. He’ll be the shooter and instant offense player off of the bench that the team desperately needs. Even if the Celtics need to overpay him, they still have the money for a max contract, if not two. I need to get a replacement for Sullinger. Enter longtime Atlanta Hawk, Al Horford. He’ll be a borderline All-Star for at least another couple of years, and it will probably be noticed much better in Boston. Now let’s see the entire roster for the team I’ve fixed…

PG- Isaiah Thomas, Marcus Smart, Terry Rozier

SG- Avery Bradley, Eric Gordon, RJ Hunter, Dejounte Murray

SF- Jae Crowder, Evan Turner, James Young

PF- Dragan Bender, Amir Johnson, Jonas Jerebko

C- Al Horford, Kelly Olynyk, Tyler Zeller

This seems like a pretty awesome roster to me, but I know you probably disagree with at least one of my moves. Would you have taken a flyer on Buddy Hield? Would you have gone after a younger big in Hassan Whiteside instead of Horford? Tell me on Twitter (again, @edelmanpis). Thanks for reading, I hope you’ve enjoyed the first two offseason previews.

  1. You need a scorer. Deep in the 4th Quarter you have to give the ball to your All-Star. I.E, Paul Pierce, Ray Allen, Durant, Paul George, Jimmy Butler, Lebron, etc… This team needs a true scorer to compete for Championships. You round out and build around your studs… This team is one stud away from competing… In my opinion.

  2. I’m not sure why but this web site is loading incredibly slow for me.
Is anyone else having this problem or is it a problem on my end?
I’ll check back later on and see if the problem still exists.

  4. Have you ever thought about adding a little bit more than just
your articles? I mean, what you say is valuable
and everything. However just imagine if you added some great photos or videos to give your posts more, “pop”!
Your content is excellent but with pics and videos, this website could certainly be one of the greatest in its field.
