Assembling the Greatest NBA Team of All Time

I’ve seen some debating on social media over the past few days about what the best starting 5 of all time would be. I’ve seen some pretty absurd lineups, some replacing Michael Jordan with Kobe Bryant, and some even substituting Stephen Curry for Magic Johnson. But I’m going to go a step further, assembling the best roster ever. Please keep in mind, the starters may not be the five best players of all time, there may be a bench player who isn’t as good as one of the starters, and there might even be a player left out when players who aren’t as good make the team. This is all about chemistry and who fits into my plans, not about who’s the best.

There will be a starting five, and then a 2nd unit. I know only 12 players can suit up, so at the end I’ll give you the players I would put on the 3rd team. With that being said, let’s take a look at the best team ever…

Starting PG: Magic Johnson

I think this one was quite obvious. With so many options, Magic doesn’t even need to think about scoring, he can just get his teammates open all game.

Starting SG: Michael Jordan

This pick really must have shocked you. The best player of all time, he will be our first scoring option and will lock down the other team’s best player.

Starting SF: Larry Bird

Is Larry Bird better than LeBron James? I have no clue, I go back and forth on it every day. But what I do know is that the starting lineup needs a shooter, and Bird is one of the best ever. He’ll be able to stand on the perimeter and knock down open three pointers.

Starting PF: Bill Russell

The amount of people on social media who don’t understand or respect Bill Russell’s greatness is absurd. Not only is he the greatest champion of all time, but he might be the best defender of all time. He was a center, but I don’t know if he’d be tall enough to play center in today’s NBA. He’ll be fine at the PF spot, guarding the other team’s best big man.

Starting C: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar

To me it’s obvious that Kareem is the best center of all time, because of not only how well he played, but because of how long he played as well. His sky-hook is virtually unstoppable, like the rest of his offensive game.

Backup PG: Stephen Curry

PLEASE DON’T HATE ME! PLEASE DO NOT SEND ME MEAN TWEETS (@edelmanpis by the way)! Stephen Curry is not the best second PG ever. There is another PG on the team who is better, and at least one that’s not on the team. But, he’s the best shooter of all time. We have someone else on this unit who can control the ball and get people open. Curry can and will do that if necessary, but I want him running around screens looking for passes so he can hit some triples.

Backup SG: Kobe Bryant

The beautiful thing about this team is that every unit will have an alpha dog (shoutout to Bill Simmons). Kobe will provide constant scoring whenever it’s needed for us, and he can take over a game at any time.

Backup SF: LeBron James

Remember how I said there was another ball-handler and playmaker on this unit? Well, here you go. Do I really have to explain what makes LeBron great? Let’s move on.

Backup PF: Tim Duncan

Tim Duncan is the best PF of all time, and it isn’t even a debate. He can protect the rim better than almost anybody, and can score from just about anywhere on the floor.

Backup C: Wilt Chamberlain

Wilt Chamberlain is the most overrated player in NBA history. Yeah, I said it. With that being said, he still would be in my top 10 players of all time. His offensive repertoire is like no other, even if he had it way easy when he played.

If there were a 3rd team, these would be the players…

3rd PG: John Stockton

3rd SG: Jerry West

3rd SF: Scottie Pippen

3rd PF: Hakeem Olajuwon

3rd C: Shaquille O’Neal

Who would be on your team? Would you start LeBron over Bird? Do you want to tweet mean things at me because of my Stephen Curry pick?
